What I do
There are over 7,500 colleges in the USA. Through a detailed assessment, I narrow it down to maybe 7 to ten, based on your family’s unique situation and student’s gifts and challenges. All options are on the table, even the non-college options. You know your student, I know the schools, the scholarships, the best programs for different majors. This process is distinctly tailored to your student’s faith, abilities and resources as well as their unique challenges.
I engage your student in his or her process of taking control of what happens after high school. At the same time, I educate them on the reality of self-support and the necessity of a marketable skill. Parents love that part because it ends up being a gentle motivation to get your student thinking about the future.
How I do it
I sit down with you and your student to accomplish 2 things.
First, I want to educate your student on the importance and seriousness of getting into the best college that his or her gifts will allow. It’s my goal for every kid to go the best school they can for what they want to do and be debt-free at the end. “End” meaning, in 4 years. If your student has no idea what he or she wants to do, that’s OKAY! There’s a plan for that!
Second, I do an assessment through a series of about 50 questions geared to get a complete picture of your student’s strengths, personality, maturity, work ethic and character. Ten of these questions are for you, the parents. Faith, emotional maturity, and personality are just as important as academics and finances.
Where your kid goes to college makes a big difference….not in the sense of pride or status. Those things mean nothing in the big picture. The difference is made post-degree with contacts made and opportunities available. All colleges are not created equally in this way. I love talking with students and getting to know them. I want them to be completely comfortable with this part.
Then, in a week or so, I sit down with you and a list of up to 10 colleges that fit your student’s profile…colleges where I feel your student would thrive, get the most scholarships, graduate and have jobs available to them after graduation. During this last meeting, I answer any questions about the college search that you have. I’ll spend as much time as you need to feel comfortable and optimistic with the process.
